Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne is a novel about the adventures of Phileas Fogg and his servant Passerpartout. One day while Phileas Fogg is with some friends, he reads in a newspaper that it is possible to travel around the world in eighty days. No one believes this is true, except Phileas. Then Phileas bets them that he could make the journey in eighty or under days, and then leaves along with his servant immediately.

In 1956 Michael Anderson directed a film about this great adventure playing David Niven as Phileas Fogg and Mexican actor Cantinflas as the servant Passerpartour.

In one of the episodes, Passerpartout fight a bull in the plaza of Chinchón, a village 45 kms from Madrid.
Nevertheless I don’t think that the two adventurers even passed Spain in the real Verne’s book (I have to confess that I didn’t read it yet), but maybe those days the influence of Ava Gardner and Orson Wells, both very keen in bullfighters, contributed to it. Without forget Ernest Hemingway which wrote some novels about bullfighters like “The Sun Also Rises” (1926) or “Death in the Afternoon” (1932)

The beautiful medieval Plaza Mayor of Chinchón is the most emblematic place of the village. Its irregular plant formed by houses of two or three floors with runes balconies, is been the scenery of multiple activities and spectacles.

I made the photographs with a Leica II (Elmar 5 and Summitar 5) and a Nikon F (24, 50, 105, 135 and 200)
